What hockey actually costs in Ottawa
Not estimates. The published price of every public camp, drop-in, clinic and skills series currently running in the city — with the medians, the spread and where the money goes.
Ask what hockey costs in Ottawa and you'll get a number between "not much" and "don't ask." Both are true, because the sport is priced in pieces. This page adds up the pieces using published prices from 656 public sessions currently listed in the city — no survey, no estimate, just what organizers are charging today.
The headline numbers
Those are medians, not averages, and medians are the honest choice here — a handful of $832 elite blocks would otherwise drag the "typical" number somewhere no typical family lives. Prices are as published, before HST, and exclude equipment and association registration.
The spread inside each format
The gap between formats is smaller than the gap inside them. A camp in Ottawa can be $20 or $700 depending on whether it's three half-days at a city rink or a full week with dryland and video.
Price range by format
Low to high, with the median marked. Series and camps are per block; drop-in and clinic are per session.
Sessions with no published price (marked TBD in the feed) are excluded.
What you're really paying per hour
The only fair comparison is dollars per hour on the ice. A $522 skills series sounds steep next to a $50 drop-in until you notice the series is eight or ten weeks. Rough per-hour math on typical Ottawa programs:

Read that column and the ranking inverts: camps are usually the cheapest ice per hour in Ottawa, and a single coached clinic is the most expensive. You're paying a premium for the one-off — which is exactly what you want when you need one specific thing fixed before tryouts.
A season, added up
Association registration sits outside this data (it varies by club and division, and it's the biggest single line in most families' year). Everything on top of it — the extra ice that's actually optional — looks roughly like this:
- Minimal ($1,000): a drop-in every couple of weeks through the season, nothing else.
- Typical ($1,804): that, plus one skills series and one summer camp week.
- Heavy: two camp weeks, a fall and a spring series, weekly drop-in — comfortably past $3,247 before equipment.
Where families actually save
- Early-bird pricing is real. Ottawa organizers routinely run $30–$60 off for booking weeks ahead — the deadline is usually published on the session page.
- Goalies pay less, often nothing. Check every listing; the policy varies by organizer.
- Half-day camps. For U11 and under, the second ice slot of the day is often the one being slept through anyway.
- Waitlists over panic-booking. Cancellations happen constantly; getting emailed about a freed spot beats booking a second-choice program you didn't want.
- Canadian Tire Jumpstart and KidSport Ottawa both fund registration for families who qualify — worth an application before you rule anything out.
